EUROPEAN SCHOOL SPORT DAY 2026

Romania celebrates the European School Sport Day (ESSD) on 25 September 2026, a flagship event in education through physical activity, organized simultaneously in more than 40 European countries. This year, over 670 schools from all counties of Romania have registered to promote physical activity, health, and community participation.

The 2026 edition highlights a highly relevant theme: urban mobility and sustainable, eco-friendly transportation. Schools across Romania are encouraged to explore, through sports and educational activities, how active travel such as walking, running, cycling, and scootering can contribute to a cleaner environment, reduced pollution, and the development of responsible communities.

Objectives of the 2026 Edition
Promote physical activity as a form of sustainable urban mobility.
Raise awareness about the impact of eco-friendly transportation on health and the environment.
Engage students in activities that encourage active travel to and from school.
Strengthen the role of physical education in developing responsible and environmentally friendly behaviors.
Activities Organized in Schools

Participating schools are organizing active mobility routes, friendly running and cycling competitions, movement-based games, workshops on sustainable transportation, awareness campaigns aimed at reducing the use of private cars, and outdoor activities involving students, teachers, parents, and volunteers. Many schools have also integrated the ESSD theme into local environmental and urban education projects.

European Context

The European School Sport Day is part of the European Week of Sport, an initiative of the European Commission, promoting physical activity for all through the #BeActive campaign. Romania is among the countries with the strongest participation, thanks to its extensive network of schools and organizations involved in education through movement and physical activity.

Conclusion

ESSD 2026 reaffirms Romania’s commitment to an active, healthy, and sustainable future. Through activities dedicated to sustainable urban mobility, schools contribute to educating a responsible generation, aware of the impact that individual choices have on the environment and the wider community.
